Lavertezzo paese: a walk through the village itself

Most visitors rush to the bridge and leave. The village of Lavertezzo itself, about 540 m up the Verzasca Valley, is worth an hour: stone lanes, a small church, river views and a trail with art.

Lavertezzo paese, the village proper, sits on the valley side above the Verzasca at about 540 m. It is a cluster of dark stone houses with slate roofs, narrow stepped lanes and gardens, and it feels more lived-in than the photos of the bridge suggest.

What to see

  • The lanes. Walk the old centre slowly: stone walls, wooden balconies, small shrines. It takes about an hour at a gentle pace.
  • The church. A small parish church stands in the village. Opening times vary, so treat it as an outside view unless the door is open.
  • The Ponte dei Salti. The famous double-arched bridge is a few minutes from the centre, see the bridge guide and the swimming safety page before you go near the water.
  • The river path. A path follows the water, with the gneiss slabs and green pools. The route also connects to the Sentiero Verzasca hike.
  • Art on the trail. Tourism pages mention the Sentiero per l’Arte, a trail with installations that starts around Lavertezzo. Check its current status locally.

Eating and resting

Small restaurants and grottos around the village serve Ticino dishes, with a few open all year and others only in season. Ask for vegetarian options if you need them. Opening times change, so check before you plan lunch around one.

Getting around

Everything in the centre is on foot. A PostBus line runs along the valley, and a car gives freedom for the dam and upper villages. Parking is tight in July and August. See how to get to Lavertezzo.

Go early or late. The bridge crowd peaks between late morning and mid-afternoon. Early morning and evening give you quiet lanes and softer light.

Where to stay

Rooms in the village are few. For more choice stay in Locarno or elsewhere in the valley, see hotels in Lavertezzo.
