From Milan Malpensa airport (MXP) you reach Lavertezzo in about two hours by car, driving north through Lugano and Bellinzona or Locarno and then up the Verzasca Valley. By public transport the trip is longer, around three to four hours, because there is no railway in the valley: you take a train towards Lugano or Locarno and finish on the PostBus.
This page is a step-by-step companion to our nearest airport guide, which compares Malpensa with Zurich and Lugano. Here we stay with Malpensa and walk through each option: driving, train plus bus, a private transfer, and a base in Locarno or Lugano if you land late. Facts below were checked in November 2026 against Money.it, SBB, TILO and the PostBus timetable on search.ch; confirm times for your date before you travel.
The four options at a glance
| Option | Typical time | Changes | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Private transfer | About the same as driving | None | Late arrivals, groups, luggage | Fixed price, book ahead |
| Train plus PostBus | About 3h to 4h | 2 to 3 | No car, low cost | Disruptions on the Malpensa line |
| Overnight in Locarno or Lugano first | Short first leg | 1 to 2 | Evening flights | Extra hotel night |
By car from Malpensa
The drive is simple on a map. You head north on the Italian motorway towards Como and the Swiss border, cross at Chiasso (or use the smaller Ponte Tresa crossing if your satnav suggests it), continue on the Swiss motorway through Lugano, then on to Bellinzona and Locarno. Money.it describes the line as the A9 to Lugano, then the A2 and the cantonal road into the valley. Near Gordola you leave for the Verzasca Valley, pass the Verzasca Dam and the lake, and reach Lavertezzo after about 20 km on the valley road.
Points to know before you set off:
- Swiss motorway vignette. Swiss motorways require an annual vignette. A car hired in Italy often does not have one, so ask at pickup or buy the e-vignette on the official site before you cross. Fines for missing it are real.
- Border timing. The crossing is free of routine passport checks under Schengen, but queues can form on busy summer weekends. Avoid peak hours if you can.
- Fuel and tolls. Fuel is priced in francs on the Swiss side, and Italian motorways charge tolls. Figures vary, so we do not quote any.
- Valley road. The last stretch is two-lane, winding and shared with the PostBus. On sunny summer weekends it backs up from the valley entrance, so aim to be on the road early.
You can compare cars at Malpensa here. Read the car rental and parking guide as well, because parking near the bridge is limited and paid.
By train and PostBus from Malpensa
Malpensa has a TILO regional line, the S50, which runs from Malpensa Terminal 2 through Varese and Stabio to Mendrisio, Lugano and on towards Biasca. From Lugano you change to a train for Bellinzona and then Locarno, where the PostBus line 321 departs for the valley. Rail aggregators show about 1h10 from Malpensa to Mendrisio and about 57 minutes from Mendrisio to Locarno, giving a total near 2h25 to Locarno once you add transfers. Add roughly an hour on the PostBus for Lavertezzo.
Practical notes:
- Works and replacement buses. The Malpensa line has been closed for track works more than once, including a replacement bus period in summer 2026 between Stabio, Varese, Gallarate and Malpensa. Check the TILO and SBB notices for your date.
- Which train section. Forum reports say some trains are coupled and split at Mendrisio. Check the destination display before you board.
- Tickets. Compare a through ticket with buying in two parts; prices change, so use the live search.
- Last bus. Late flights can miss the last PostBus up the valley, and the evening service is thinner than the day service. See the PostBus 321 guide.
By private transfer
A pre-booked transfer is the least stressful option after a long flight. The driver meets you at arrivals, deals with the border and takes you to your door in Lavertezzo or Locarno. Two things to check: the final price includes tolls and the vignette, and the company monitors your flight if it is delayed. We cannot quote fares, because they vary by date, car size and booking time.
Sleeping first in Locarno or Lugano
If your flight lands after about 6 pm, an overnight stay breaks the trip into easy parts. Locarno on Lake Maggiore is the closest base to the valley mouth and the start of the PostBus. Lugano is on the way. Many visitors do the valley as a day trip from Locarno and keep a hotel there for the whole stay. Look through the hotels guide for the pros and cons of staying in the village itself.
What to see first when you arrive
Plan the first stop on the road up the valley. The Verzasca Dam is a short roadside stop on the way and a good place to stretch your legs. After that, the Ponte dei Salti is the main attraction in Lavertezzo. If you have a few days, the Lavertezzo to Sonogno hike and the villages in Sonogno and Corippo are worth the time.
Budget and timing tips
- Compare total cost, not just the flight. A cheap flight to Malpensa can lose its advantage if you add a hire car, vignette and parking. A guest card can offset some of that: Money.it reports that the Ticino Ticket gives free PostBus travel if you stay at least one night in Ticino, but ask your host whether your accommodation takes part.
- Avoid summer peak hours. Leave Malpensa before 10 am on a Saturday in July or August and you may reach the valley before the queue builds.
- Pick a weekday if you can. The valley is calmer Monday to Thursday, which helps with both traffic and parking. See best time to visit.
- Check swimming conditions. Never plan a swim straight after a long drive without checking the river level. Our swimming safety page explains how.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Malpensa to Lavertezzo?
By car about two hours in normal traffic, more if the border or the valley entrance is queued. By train and PostBus plan for roughly three to four hours with changes. Verify the live timetable on SBB or TILO for your date.
Is there a direct train from Malpensa to Lavertezzo?
No. There is no railway in the Verzasca Valley. You take a train towards Lugano or Locarno and finish the journey on the PostBus line 321 or by taxi.
Do I need a passport to cross from Italy to Ticino?
There is no routine passport check at the border thanks to Schengen, but carry your passport or ID card because spot checks happen and car rental companies ask for documents.
Is it worth hiring a car at Malpensa for the Verzasca Valley?
Usually yes if you want the dam, Lavertezzo, Corippo and Sonogno in one day. If you only want the Ponte dei Salti and will sleep in Locarno, the bus is enough.
Can I take a taxi or private transfer from Malpensa to Lavertezzo?
Yes. Private transfers can be booked in advance for a fixed price, which is useful for late flights or groups. Prices vary by date and vehicle, so use the live quote rather than a fixed figure.
