The nearest airport to Lavertezzo that you can realistically fly into is Milan Malpensa (MXP), around two hours away by car, with Zurich (ZRH) about three hours away by train. The tiny airport at Lugano-Agno is closer on the map, but as far as we could confirm in November 2026 it has no regular scheduled passenger service, so it is not a booking option for most visitors.

Lavertezzo sits about 20 km up the Verzasca Valley from Locarno, and there is no railway in the valley. Whichever airport you choose, the last stretch is by road: your own or rental car, a private transfer, or the PostBus. This page compares the airports so you can pick before you book a flight. For the road and bus details once you are in Ticino, see how to get to Lavertezzo.

Milan Malpensa (MXP): usually the closest real choice

Malpensa is the airport most travellers end up using for the Verzasca Valley. The Italian magazine Money.it gives about 1 hour 45 minutes by car from Milan to the valley in normal traffic, adding that summer weekend queues at the valley entrance can add a lot of time. From Malpensa itself, count on a similar figure, plus time at the Italian-Swiss border, which is not a passport check under Schengen but can still be slow on busy days.

Why it works well:

  • More flights and often lower fares than Swiss airports, especially from Europe.
  • Car hire is easy. You collect a car at the airport and drive north through Lugano and on to Locarno. See our dedicated guide to Malpensa to Lavertezzo.
  • Trains exist but need changes, and the schedule can be disrupted by track works on the Italian side, so allow extra time.

Zurich (ZRH): the all-train option

Zurich is the main Swiss gateway and the better choice if you prefer to travel by rail or have a Swiss travel pass. There is no direct train from Zurich Airport to Locarno. The usual route is a short train to Zurich main station (about 15 minutes, every few minutes), an hourly connection towards Bellinzona (roughly 1h40 to 1h55 according to rail aggregators), and a local train on to Locarno (20 to 30 minutes). Then you take the PostBus. Overall it is about three hours to Locarno and a further hour or so to Lavertezzo.

Zurich makes sense if:

  1. You are already travelling across Switzerland by train.
  2. You want to avoid driving in Italy or buying a vignette.
  3. You are flying long-haul and need the widest choice of connections.

Lugano-Agno (LUG): close, but not for most visitors

Lugano’s airport is about an hour from Lavertezzo by road, which is why it appears on every map of the area. In practice, Wikipedia states that as of March 2025 no regular flights were scheduled, and we found only charter and private activity afterwards. An operating licence runs to 2056, and an airline has signed a letter of intent for scheduled service, but we found no launch date. Treat Lugano as an airport to check, not to rely on. If flights start, it would become the nearest practical airport.

Locarno airfield

Locarno has a small airfield that handles private and general aviation. It is not a place to book an airline ticket. You can use Locarno as your base, however: it is the town where roads, trains and the Verzasca PostBus meet, and many visitors sleep there.

Getting from the airport to the valley

Option Door-to-door from MXP or ZRH Good if Weak point
Hire car About 2h (MXP) to 3h (ZRH) You want the dam, Corippo and Sonogno in one day Parking in July and August
Private transfer Similar to driving Groups, late arrivals, no licence Fixed price, agree it in advance
Train plus PostBus About 3h to 4h Low cost, no driving Several changes; reduced service off-season

Hire a car at the airport

A car is the most flexible way to use the valley. Read our car rental and parking guide before you book, because parking near the Ponte dei Salti is limited and paid.

If you fly to Zurich instead, use this search:

Book a private transfer

A transfer is worth considering for late flights, families with luggage or groups of four or more. Prices vary by date and vehicle, so use the live quote.

Take the PostBus from Locarno

From Locarno station, the PostBus line 321 runs up the valley. The search.ch timetable we checked in November 2026 listed three morning departures 30 minutes apart and a journey of about 1h10 to Sonogno, the end of the line, so Lavertezzo is somewhat sooner. Read our PostBus 321 guide for the stops and what changes outside summer.

Which airport should you choose?

  • Choose Milan Malpensa if you will hire a car, want the cheapest flight, or plan to see Lake Como or Lake Maggiore as well.
  • Choose Zurich if you prefer trains, have a Swiss travel pass, or are connecting from long-haul.
  • Wait on Lugano until scheduled flights are confirmed.

If you would rather not drive from the airport, see the Verzasca Valley tours that include transport and spare you the driving. Plan the rest of your trip with the things to do and best time to visit guides, and book a base using the Lavertezzo hotels guide.

Practical tips for arrival day

  • Do not plan a swim for arrival day if you land late. The river is cold and the safe window is daylight. Read the swimming safety guide.
  • Sort out parking early. A day card is cheaper than paying short-stay rates all afternoon.
  • Check the weather before you drive up; the valley can see sudden storms. See the weather page.
  • Sleep in Locarno if you arrive late, then go up the valley in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nearest airport to Lavertezzo?

Geographically the nearest is the small Lugano-Agno airport, but it has no confirmed scheduled passenger flights at the moment. The nearest airport you can actually book flights to is Milan Malpensa (MXP), about two hours by road, with Zurich (ZRH) as the main Swiss alternative at roughly three hours by train.

Is there an airport in Locarno?

Locarno has a small airfield used for private and general aviation, not for scheduled passenger service. Check the operator directly if you plan to arrive on a private flight.

Should I fly into Zurich or Milan for the Verzasca Valley?

Milan Malpensa is usually closer by road and often cheaper to reach with a hire car, but you cross the Italian-Swiss border. Zurich suits you if you want a train all the way and Swiss rail passes. Compare live fares for both before you decide.

Can I get from the airport to Lavertezzo without a car?

Yes. Take a train to Locarno (via Lugano or Bellinzona, or via Zurich), then the PostBus line 321 up the valley. Expect two to three changes and about three to four hours from either airport, so check the SBB timetable for your date.

Do I need a Swiss motorway vignette if I drive from Milan?

Yes, a Swiss motorway vignette is required to use Swiss motorways such as the A2. A rental car registered in Switzerland usually has one; a car hired in Italy often does not, so ask the rental company at pickup.
