Most visitors see only the bridge, yet the Verzasca Valley has other places that reward a detour. Sonogno and Corippo are very different: one is the end of the road at the head of the valley, the other a tiny village on a slope. Both are built in the dark local stone.
Sonogno
Sonogno is the last village on the valley road, at about 920 m. The air is cooler, the surroundings more alpine and many trails begin here.
- Museo di Val Verzasca. A small museum of rural life and trades in the valley. Check opening days and hours before you go, as they change by season.
- Walks. Paths start from the village, from easy riverside strolls to mountain routes. Yellow signposts mark regular hiking paths. See hikes around Lavertezzo.
- Atmosphere. Stone houses, narrow lanes and a feeling of the valley’s end.
Corippo
Corippo lies on a steep hillside above the valley floor, lower down the valley than Lavertezzo, and is reached by a side road or footpath. It is a compact cluster of stone houses with a small church, long known as Switzerland’s smallest municipality, until the municipalities of the valley merged in 2020. A restoration project has turned empty houses into guest rooms, so a stay in the village is possible.
- Walk the lanes and look at the old building techniques, roofs of stone slabs and arched passages.
- Take a trail to Mergoscia or the nearby villages if you want a longer walk.
- Respect residents. It is a living village with very few people.

How to combine them with Lavertezzo
On a day with a car: dam in the morning, Corippo, Lavertezzo and the bridge at midday, then Sonogno in the afternoon. Without a car, use the PostBus along the valley and check the timetable for the last return. See how to get to Lavertezzo.
For a long walk from Sonogno, see the Sonogno to Lavertezzo hike. On the way, Brione Verzasca is another village worth a stop.
